Virginia's Governor wants to drastically cut the budget for Project Discovery, a proven and practical program that has helped send thousands of low-income Virginia students to college.
The Governor has suggested cutting Project Discovery by about 70%, from $619,500 to $175,000 annually. Athough not a huge item for the state budget, this cut will hurt hundreds and hundreds of Virginia's most vulnerable middle and high school students.
Press Release from Project Discovery about potential funding cut
Local nonprofits like AHC Inc. in Arlington help low-income students develop study skills, maintain their grades, fill out application forms, apply for financial aid, and visit colleges. The program works. Over the years, more than 80% of the teens in AHC's program have gone to college -- many the first in their families to achieve this milestone.
Please contact your local elected officials and Governor Bob McDonnell TODAY to help AHC -- and other Virginia nonprofit organizations -- continue to help low-income students successfully graduate from high school and go to college.
If Project Discovery's funding is cut, fewer low-income students will finish high school and go to college.

Dear Senator or Mr. or Mrs. (for delegate) or Governor McDonnell,
I am writing because I am concerned about the potential cut back in funding for a statewide program called Project Discovery. This program has helped thousands of low- and moderate-income students go to college.
Governor Bob McDonnell's proposed budget includes cutting Project Discovery, which costs the state about $620,000 each year.
Please vote against this budget cut. Project Discovery is a practical program that helps students navigate the complicated process of getting into college.

Please don't cut this proven program, which is doing a great job of helping Virginia families build stronger futures.
Sincerely,
